GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - A 12-foot sperm whale has become beached in southeastern Texas and rescuers are working to keep it alive.
Heidi Whitehead, a coordinator with the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network, says she is part of a rescue crew trying to haul the mammal to a rehab facility in Galveston. Whitehead says it is a calf.
Galveston police received a call around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday saying the whale had been beached on the west side of the island, in an area known for resorts, condominiums and beach houses.
Police dispatcher Billy Sanders told The Associated Press that it's extremely unusual for a live whale to become beached in the area but that dolphins commonly wash up on shore.
