1st time I've caught a herp in the wild

Was out doing a little fishing in a small reservoir when this little fellow popped up on a tree by me. I was so excited I dropped my pole in the water, but got it back and got the picture with my phone camera.

Nice!! Depending on your location, this is either a common five-lined skink (Plestiodon fasciatus or the southeastern five-lined skink (Plestiodon inexpectatus). The only reliable way to separate the two species where their ranges overlap is by the scales beneath the tail. If there is a single row of wide scales, it's the common five-lined skink. If the scales are all uniformly small, it's the southeastern five-lined skink.

If you'd like, you can commemorate your first herp photo by uploading it as a record to www.herpmapper.org/submit. It's a website used by biologists to keep track of reptile and amphibian sightings worldwide, but is also a fun way to keep track of your herpetofaunal "life list", or the species you encounter throughout your lifetime.
