cage construction question

I have no experience with woodworking etc. and have a few questions. want to build 4x2x1 cages for north american snakes, so humidity won't be extreme, maybe later I'll look into a BRB or lizards.

As a general rule, are the sides sandwiched between the top and bottom and the back covers all? Is 4'x'8'x.75" birch plywood OK?

Finishing: exterior stain then polyurethane coating? Interior: will rubberized contact paper work? stain then envirotex epoxy or water base polyurethane?

I'm also paranoid about flexwatt attached to wood. Will the following idea be structurally stable? Make a .25" groove around the interior 1.5" from bottom and insert a 4'x2'x.25" piece of expanded PVC sheet as the cage bottom. Silicone the seams. If needed, build a subframe with brace across middle for support and attach heat tape to PVC.

Clay - your cages look great and I will try and use your plans.
