I only wanted one because I had no intentions of breeding and I feel like it would be easier to keep watch on the young monitor's health and feeding. This will also be my first monitor.
Any info regarding my questions above will be greatly appreciated. I only want to know if I need 2 or will one do just fine alone with the proper care.

I'm not sure of what health issues could arise from keeping them alone but having one lone monitor is
imo perfectly acceptable, in fact, I believe most monitors are kept singularly and possibly prefer it. It's commonly accepted that monitors become egg bound from not having a proper nesting site and/or husbandry, and not necessarily from being alone. I can't remember ever having a problem with keeping a varanid alone; however, I've had plenty of problems keeping them in pairs, trios and groups, especially when they weren't raised up together from hatchlings.
