Releasing NATIVE species

I know that you shoud never let go unnative species but I have an idea. If i were to let go in my wooded backyard species that use to be native such as Garter snakes or american toads, would this be frowned upon?
I think that it might be good for the ecosystem. The back of my backyard is heavily wooded and I'd be sure to put hiding places down such as as fence panels put together. Also, are checkered garter snakes able to survive in southern NY (Long island)?
