iguana guys.

Mainly a question for the cuban and rhino guys.

Mine are about to go outside for the season. Can anyone recommend a pellet food That I can put outside that will hold up over a hot day. I have used alfalfa pellets in the past. Mazuri only sells in 1.5lb bags. Giving them greens outside results in wilted and very brown food by noon.

Mazuri sells 25lb bags for $28.49 :http://www.mazuri.com/mazuritortoisediet.aspx
That's what I use for them.

How are you offering it?
can it be used as a staple or just a supplement?

Well that depends I think. I always make sure that they eat an entire bowl of their staple greens first before I bring this out. I just let them fill up on it because they love it. There is no animal protein inside so there is no need to worry of internal damages. It is an excellent source of protein, fiber, and other nutrients that help them grow much faster. For Cycluras, this tends to work quite well given the fact that they are a bulkier genus of Iguanidae. The extra protein and fiber work like a champ.

Another good thing about the Mazuri is that you can let them soak longer to absorb more water. I've noticed that my one male, no matter how dehydrated he looks, will not drink water. Generally their water supply comes from their greens. This can lead to problems in the summer temps with the food drying up real fast. The longer you soak the Mazuri, the more hydrated they will get once consumption occurs. It's a good way to kill two birds with one stone so to speak.

Looking at it now I guess I do consider them a staple. Just make sure the greens are consumed first, along with any vegetables you might be feeding, then bring this out to finish it off.

Hope this helps

The mazuri tortoise chow works really well, i like the zoomed grassland tortoise diet for mine. Its not as processed and it mixes easily with greens to make a salad.
