If I had to guess, it sounds like probably a house that has been in the family long enough to be paid off, because none of the mortgage places I've ever worked with will let you have a loan with no homeowner's insurance. I have never been able to understand why people don't get homeowner's insurance... it's so cheap compared to the potential savings.

Anyway, this is just sad. So many people get into "business" without getting enough good advice as to how to protect themselves. I'm sorry to hear about this.
