King Cobra Taxonomy

I'm just curious if anyone here knows why the King Cobra (Ophiophagus Hannah) is not considered a "true" cobra and classified under the genus Naja?

Yes, it eats other snakes (cobras even)...hence it's name ophiophagus, but is this all there is to it, or is there some other taxonomic reasoning for having it's own genus?

ask over at www.thereptileroom.org.

As of this moment, the reason escapes me, though we were just discussing it the other night in the chatroom.

Maybe...

because they have 3 lungs which enables them to make a growling sound? Or because they build nests to incubate their eggs? There are probably more differences but this is what came to my mind first off. They also have the reputation of being the smartest snake. Having kept cobras for over 30 years and Kings for 4 years, I'll have to agree with this.

Well, you learn something new everyday. I didn't realise they had three lungs or a reputation for being the smartest snakes. Is that reputation based on being compared to non-venomous aswell? Interesting.
