No substrate?

I have Vision cages and I was thinking that the plastic flooring could be easily kept clean by wiping them down frequently instead of using and replacing substrate.
Anyone have thoughts on this?

Two reasons I wouldn't do it myself.
FIrst easy to keep clean would only apply if you cleaned out defecations, especially the urates, virtually immediately. If you've ever tried to remove dried urates from the bottom of a rubbermaid you'll understand this one.
Second, with no substrate, there's no absorption what so ever. As a result the snake will be swimming in its own waste until you get it cleaned, and it will likely mean the added wiping down of the snake each time.

If it's an arboreal snake, like a chondro, then these points would be less important. For terrestrial snakes though, substrate does serve a purpose.
Not only for absorption of wastes, but it acts as a type of heat sink for under cage heating, as well as contributes to the overall comfort of the snake in my opinion.

Good point on the snake urates, but I was primarily thinking of the lizard cages, I now have more lizards than snakes.
Somehow the lizard poo doesn't seem to have the same superglue factor in them as snake poos do.
What does 'heat sink' mean?

A heat sink, Lucille, is something that helps to dissipate heat. CPU's have heat sinks on them, in order to dissipate the heat created by the processor, so that your processor doesnt fuse to your motherboard. (it can get that hot)

What i think Clay meant, is the substrate holds heat too and will give a more natural feel for the critter instead of the warm plastic *shivers* eww.

Even if its just for the comfort, i'd keep some paper towels in there at least.

I've been doing the no substrate thing for a few days now and I like it. Each lizard cage has a large pan of substrate in the cage to burrow around if they want as well as hides and branches. The snakes have hides and bark pieces and branches.
The critters seem fine and comfy, I'll see how it goes.
