Bogus paypal email - do not reply if you get it

I got the email below today. It is not from Paypal. If you get it, do not respond!

Dear Paypal valued member,

Due to concerns, for the safety and integrity of the paypal
account we have issued this warning message.

It has come to our attention that your account information needs
to be updated due to inactive members, frauds and spoof reports.
If you could please take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and renew
your records you will not run into any future problems with the online service.
However, failure to update your records will result in account suspension
This notification expires on 48.

Once you have updated your account records your paypal account
service will not be interrupted and will continue as normal.

Please follow the link below and login to your account
and renew your account information
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_login-run

Here is the response from paypal when I questioned it.

Dear Steve Jordanides,

Thank you for contacting PayPal.

We appreciate you bringing this suspicious email to our attention. We
can confirm that the email you received was not sent to you by PayPal.
The website linked to this email is not a registered URL authorized or
used by PayPal. We are currently investigating this incident fully.
Please do not enter any personal or financial information into this
website.

If you have surrendered any personal or financial information to this
fraudulent website, you should immediately log into your PayPal Account
and change your password and secret question and answer information.
Any
compromised financial information should be reported to the appropriate
parties.

If you notice any unauthorized activity associated with your PayPal
transaction history, please immediately report this to PayPal by
following the instructions below:

1. Log in to your account at https://www.paypal.com/ by entering
your email address and password into the Member Log In box

2. Click on Security Center at the bottom of the page

3. Click on the 'Unauthorized Transaction' link under the Report a
Problem column

4. Please follow the instructions in order to access the
appropriate
form

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us
again.

Whomever your ISP is they most likely have a fraud@...... to forward those to.

I get them in flurries, 5 or 10 in a few days then none for a while then more.

Forward them to the proper authorities.

NOTE: Pay-pal will always address you by your full name. Anything else is someone attempting to get your information.

Unfortunately a lot of people don't question emails like this.

Look at how many people still fall for those Nigerian cashier check scams.

I realize a LOT of you were already aware this was a scam but I posted to warn the new people.

You are absolutely right. It is very important to let people know when this happen. Maybe most of us are aware of these scams. But new people sign daily with PayPal and might not be aware of this situtation. If they continue with this practice, it's because they have a certain degree of success. I was also told to report these e-mails to: uce@ftc.gov

There are several other bogus e-mails going around, banks, eBay, etc.

I forgot to mention that the only difference with the true PayPal site is the "s" after http. The true PayPal address is http://www.PayPal.com whereas the "bogus" one is https://www.PayPal.com

I think you have that reversed. When I type "www.paypal.com" into my browser's address window it takes me to https://www.paypal.com/

And that itself is not the only way to be certain as one can still be redirected from an e-mail by means of HTML. When in doubt, don't click on a link in an e-mail. Enter the address manually into your browser.

You are more than likely right. My computer knowledge is highly dependent on how well both of my index fingers work on a particular day All I know is that when I typed www.paypal.com I was taken to the "true" PayPal site. I didn't even experiment with clicking on the other link. Who knows what kind of door I'm opening!
