Roses
I am enchanted by roses and grow many of them. As well as the hybrid teas that many people think of, when they think of roses, I grow many of the other varietes.
My favorite hybrid tea is a rose named Veteran's Honor, a tradional red long stemmed high centered rose and it is breathtaking.
However, just as beautiful, in their own ways, are the other types of roses. I have hybrid musks, many who have small single blooms but which have beautiful scents.
I have a 'gatekeeper' rose. Toward the back of my property (only 1/4 acre, it is amazing how many plants I grow on it, however) there is a section of hurricane fence that is on a right of way and about 200 feet further is a heavily travelled road. I wanted to discourage wanderers from coming over my fence, so I planted a Mermaid. This rose has small, pretty light yellow blooms. It also has the most wicked thorns I have seen on any rose and can easily get 30 feet across. It performs its gatekeeper job quite well, and with style. I never water it, spray it, or do anything except add a bit of fertilizer once or twice a year.
I have a few of the 'Buck' roses, Prairie Sunrise I think. These are shrubs which are beautiful yet carefree, decorative yet sturdy. I have the famous China, Old Blush, prolific and beautiful but with a different kind of bloom that the hybrid teas, looser and not as high centered.
I have some Austin roses, among them Graham Thomas, yellow and fragrant.
The easiest and most prolific rose for landscpe use I have is Belinda's Dream; pink high centered blooms on an extremely low maintenance shrub.
There are many others since I have a yard full of them, and I get compliments from the neighbors as well as providing bouquets for many, brightening the day of people at school, friends, neighbors, etc.
I love gardening, and for me, roses are a delight. How about y'all, do you grow roses? Which ones?
