Question Locating Rubber Boas in Northern California

I have been trying to find Coastal Rubber Boas (Charina bottae) around where I live for about six months, and I have not had any luck. They are pretty much the only snake in my area I have not found.

I am located in Marin County, and they are supposed to be pretty common here. I have tried looking in different habitats where I read they could be found, but I still have not had any luck. I think it might be where I'm actually looking within the habitat.

Where do they normally hide? I've been turning over logs, rocks, large pieces of bark, etc (and putting them back of course), but I sill haven't found one boa. Do they hide under objects or do they dig underground burrows? Is there a specific time of day when I would be most likely to find one?

I know they live around here, because I've talked to several people who have found them, but I am just having really crappy luck finding them myself. Thanks for any replies!

Try looking areas that have well drained soil, i.e, sand. Look on overcast or cool days, when the temp is around 50-60 Deg. F. I've even found them on rainy days under field cover. I would also try road cruising at night. That is how I've found the largest number of them. E-mail me if you have more questions epatton4@hotmail.com
Good luck!
