Sorry about all these hoops to jump through, but I am quite serious about blocking spammers and scammers at the gate on this site and am doing the very best that I can to that effect. Trust me, I would rather be doing more interesting things with my time, and wouldn't be making this effort if I didn't think it was worthwhile.

Color phases in western hognose
I have recently been doing a bit of research into the keeping of western hognose. They seem to be very interesting snakes and I think I might be planning a purchase soon. The one question I have has to do with the color phases. I know the albinos are a genetically inherited color but I am wondering about red,green and yellow phase. Are these genetic traits or a selectively bred trait? Any additional information anyone might have on hognose genetics would be more than welcome as well.

There are albino, hypo, leucistic and anerythristic genetic morphs of western hognose. The red, orange, green, brown, grey, yellow ground colorations of normal hognose is just the natural variety of pigmentation you find in them as they vary in range/geography/climate in the wild. If you breed a red to a green you won't get Christmas snakes. Sorry. Evan
