Question Too many mealworm beetles = smell?

I've never quite experienced this before, but then again, I've never had so many mealworm beetles before either, but I've got a ton of them and now whenever I'm cleaning the bins I get a whif of this acrid smell. The mealworms themselves never seem to smell, but the beetles are definately producing some scent, something I should worry about? Bad for the gecko?

What are you using as a substrate?
At times I have huge amounts of beetles. I haven't noticed a definite smell though. I wonder if they do give off an odor? How is your ventilation? Mine are pretty much in an open bin so that may be why I don't smell anything.

I'm using a mix of oat, oat bran, wheat, wheat bran, bee pollen, crushed sunflower seeds, spirallina sp?, some T-rex cricket gutload, and some random other stuff (baby cereal, lab monkey chow, etc).

I feed them mainly carrots since they don't seem to like the potatoes, and I've had mold problems with potatoes. Apples occasionally.

All of my mealworms and beetles are in little gladware tubs with no lid inside of one of my dresser drawers (heehee).

I gotta get REAL close to smell them, otherwise they don't really smell much at all.

The beetles do produce an odor when they're overcrowded/eating each other. I should know this, but I plum forgot if they're either a type of stink bug or related to them.

They're in the family Tenebrionidae which includes darkling beetles aka "stink bugs".
