The younger generation doesn't have the drive to climb the ladder, instead they wait for the guy ahead of them to screw up and get promoted until they fail too.

The sad part is, I'm technically part of the younger generation and I see it and deal with it every day. Really makes it hard to give half a rat's @$$ when you busted yours to prove yourself and make it a rung or two up the ladder only to see lazy and incompetent people get promotions just because they've been around for a couple years. Even then, most of them are only around that long due to the litigious society we live in where HR departments are too scared to fire somebody in an at-will state...

Stings even worse when you think about how hard it is to get good help then watch those exceedingly rare people leave for greener pastures after being promised promotions and better pay that never comes (if they even last that long before somebody else snatches them up).

Hell... I was promised when I took my last promotion that they would make sure my old position was back-filled so I'd have help. Problem is, there's nobody I trust in a lower-level role that we can promote from and hiring somebody from the outside is out of the question.

JColt, I'm not sure which city you're in, but I know a couple people that have been in the LE field on that side of the river and most of them have said the same thing. I also know a couple younger deputies over this way that are some level headed hard-working guys, but that isn't always the norm here either. It gets even worse once you get to the federal level (which we have a lot of in these parts, thanks to the late senator Byrd). Some of the ones that work for uncle Sam are real pieces of work! To the point where my local sheriff actually instructs his deputies to not be lenient with anyone wearing a DOJ uniform, after the behavior of some of the "FNG's." Sadly enough, I do understand some of the state/local LEO's being disgruntled and lazy with what they get paid around here. Pretty bad when you can make as much or more working at sheetz as a you do as a state trooper.

I also have to say that just because I specifically refer to the lack of quality help found in those around my age or younger doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of folks older than me that are just as bad...

Oh yeah, I have had both young and old good and bad. Biggest problem where I'm at is for every good one it seems 3 or 4 are bad. Plus my tolerance level gets lower as I get older, lol.

That's about the ratio I deal with in my department. I also know exactly how you feel about the tolerance level. In my field that's not a good thing. Makes me want to switch careers pretty badly.

My wife also deals with the same problems in, let's just say, a somewhat similar environment to the one you work in. She's actively taken steps to switch careers in the next few years by enrolling in an associates of sciences in nursing program that specifically preps you to be an RN. Pretty bad when she makes close to what my boss makes but the BS from above combined with the laziness and ineptitude of the newer staff there is still unbearable. She's even switched to a midnight shift to lessen her contact with it all. I won't lie and say it hasn't put some extra stress on our home life, but since it helps keep her sane I'm happy to deal with it. I just wish I could make a similar move with my job...

I can retire next November. I am thinking of doing lawn care as I'm too young to just sit around. Just enough clients to keep me busy and not too much stress if weather gets me behind. In winter I would work in computer workshop and still do my side computer work I do now. Right now I'm doing a 12 computer replacement along with back up system and 3 printer set up. I plan on doing 5 or less jobs after retirement. No more working till midnight after work.
