AMBUSH!!

Sometimes, camouflage and great hiding places aren't necessary...especially when the unknowing target is coming home from a 12 hr night shift. Believe it or not, I actually opened this door without seeing him...found him sitting there when I brought the dogs out 3 minutes later. It was only about 40 degrees that morning, and he didn't want to hear about moving, so I'm sure he didn't just appear in those few minutes. (I guess I didn't place my hand on the knob...probably just reached up as I stepped, and hooked it with a couple of fingers?)
Anyway, I doubt this fella (gal?) would have liked it much if I had just grabbed. Anybody know what it is (aside from the obvious)

Once I moved it into the sun, and it warmed up a bit, it didn't sit as still for pictures....
After I was done, I put it in the hedge in front of my house. I'd love to find it again in the spring....

Sweet pics Harald. Pretty good sized too. Spiders have got to be one of the hardest things to identify (even on the web (no pun intended)), I found a pure white spider on my car this year, and for the life of me I couldn't find anything to help with figuring out exactly what it was.

I have to say it again. Harald, you are an amazing photographer. Some of your shots are truly stunning. I could look at them all day.

As far as the ID goes, I am no spider expert by any stretch of the imagination, but it kinda looks like an Orb Weaving spider.

awesome pics!

I agree with Sammy, looks like an orb-weaver, similar to this one:

or this one:

luckily they are 'harmless to humans'

Nice pics Harald. All the help I can be ID'ing it is to tell you it is a she. John Apple would be your best choice on ID'ing it. If he doesn't see this thread before this weekend I'll tell him of it and he can give you a definitive ID. Again, nice pics.

Your photography never ceases to amaze me, Harald!!

Of course, it helps when you have fascinating subject matter.

Wonderful pics, Harald. You actually made the spider look good--and I don't like spiders...
