No, I didn't figure it out. He's only got 2 pieces of cage furniture - a large "rock" resin bowl and similar large resin hide. There was a "plug" of junk attached to the scab, which could possibly have had a splinter in it (aspen bedding? That's the only wood product in his cage) - Since all this happened I changed him to a different paper-based bedding.
