I've been knocking this around my brain for a long time now... I really don't know where to begin or whom to contact that won't just steal my idea and take it as their own! So, I've decided to DONATE this idea to my Herp Brotheren....here it is:

Right now, it IS possible to "microchip" an animal so that if it's ever stolen or lost, all you have to do is scan it and the ID number pops up and you know it's your animal....well...how about "LOJAKING" AN ANIMAL with a microchip!! I mean, take a microchip and insert a small battery that could send out a signal that could be inserted right under the skin....when the animal is stolen or lost, turn the machine on and track the beep right to the animal??? With the technology of today...I can't believe it hasn't been thought of before this! Here's your chance to be a HERO in the Herp World! Let me know what you guys think about this....and ESPECIALLY if someone wants to work on it, either with me, or by yourself....Neil

It's been a long time since I looked into them, but I believe the microchips have a very limited range. The scanners I remember had to be within three feet of the chip in order to recognize it. Even with advances in technology, I would doubt anything beyond 20 feet would be detectable.

Of course, for all I know, we all have chips inside of us with satellites keeping tabs on us and the government knows EXACTLY who and where we are at all times!

Hi Neil
Hello from the north...AND CANADA RULES!!!
just to let you know, that microchipping does exist in animals.
It has been done on show cats and dogs for a few years now, and I have seen it done a few times on snakes. This is simply done by a small guage needle, and the chip is encoded with a personal id number, and that animal is the only animal to ever receive that number. Upon resale, that number is transfered with that said animal. When that animal is deceased, only then, is that number ever available for use again. These small chips are read by a gun, much like a thermometer gun. Simply point and the number is read.
If you want some more infoo, I am sure I could muster that up for you, and there are vets that have this information as well. There are directories that store these ID number much like the Canadian and American Kennel Clubs., for dogs.
Take care, and wipe the tears, four years from now, US can try again......hee hee

Why not teach them to repeat their adress and phone number?

Seriously, for a tracker type like your idea, it would be a large foriegn object that would most likely have problems with rejection and infections from the rejection due to the size required to make it have any useable range at all.
An added bonus is the battery, yes, even lithium, would have to be replaced often and that would further complications incurred in the process.

Any one thought of fingerprinting their snake, with a good quality close up , panoramic picture of their reptiles? Every individual doesn,t match exactly in coloration and appearance.
With regular updates, even the change in appearance over time due to sheds, gravidity etc.would be reasonable enough to be allowed in court cases.
And a picture would eliminate any stress involved with injections, surgeries and complications of a foreign body insertion, even one so small as the currently available
micro-chip.

Beth....I KNOW that!! I'm saying that if someone came up with a way to put a micro-battery INTO that chip (just like LOJAK)....then when the animal is stolen, you could turn on the machine and the micro-chip with the micro-battery would SEND OUT A SIGNAL (it WON'T beep on it's own!&#33 which could be tracked! Like they do with whales and sharks, and condors, etc...but only with an INTERNAL chip instead of the "darts or harnesses" they use now??? It seems like it would be so easy with all the new technology we have today??? Now do you understand what I'm talking about??? ....Neil

In theory it sounds good, if it is even possible, but think of it this way. Your only going to do it to valuable animals. Someone who goes after valuable animals is probably gonna know that there is the possiblity of the animal being "lowjacked". So, what's he gonna do? He is gonna cut the animal open to get the chip out. Most likely the animal is going to die. So in the end, not only did you get robbed, but there is a dead animal.
