I need some help. I currently live in the Pacific Nothwest, Seattle area. My wife was informed about a reptile/aviary place. So my wife and I went and checked it out. I was appalled by what I saw in this establishment. I saw Jackson and Veiled Chameleons housed in the same housing, even though it was an extremely large enclosure, his choice of decorations was quite depressing. It appeared as if he just cut down a bush and trimmed his tree's from his front yard and threw it in the enclosure a few years ago. There are leaves rotting on the floor of the enclosure, the smell was absolutely disgusting. My biggest concern was, the fact that he had absolutely no means of UVB in the enclosure. He heated and lighted the enclosure by only using regular household light bulbs. The chameleons themselves were dehydrated, a noticable sign was their sunken eyes.
The enclosure right next to the chameleons was even more depressing. It housed 4 adult bearded dragons and 1 unknown mali uromastyx, the lighting again was only household light bulbs. The enclosure itself was extremely dirty, not with dragon waste, but was covered in dirt, cob webs all over, and even spider webs in the corners with dead crickets trapped in the webs. The most disturbing thing about this enclosure was the fact that it was only maybe a 2 foot by 2 foot enclosure. So let me sum up this enclosure - 4 adult bearded dragons and 1 uromastyx in a 2 foot by 2 foot enclosure, lit only by household light bulbs with no UVB. There was apparant signs of MDB in this enclosure on one of the dragons.
Over in the corner, there was 2 extremely large snakes. I would say they were between 12-15 feet long. NO LIGHTING or souce of heat what so ever. The entire enclosure was absolutely filthy. The entire enclosure was about 8 foot by 5 foot. I truly cannot give a good description because I couldn't stand there very long due to the stench and the snakes really did not have enough room to move around. For the few seconds I was there I leaned up against the glass and the entire enclosure was ice cold. For snakes this size, I would say they would be alot fatter as well. They almost seemed lethargic.
The 20 or so bearded dragons kept in a critter keeper was the last straw. They were literally stacked on top of each other. The amount of waste and the appearance alone was just so disgusting that my wife and I decided that we were not going any further except out the door. We felt so bad that we just wanted to buy everything in it and take them home just to give them a descent home.
Now my question is, what can I do about this? Who can I contact to make sure that this type of environment will not be tolerated? My wife talked with the owner for a few minutes and asked were the UV bulbs were. He told my wife that UV is just a myth and is just a costly gimmick that was put on the market to make consumers spend more money. He stated that he has never used any form of UVB. This place truly needs to be shut down, and I will do anything to make sure this happens. I just need to be pointed in the right direction so I can make this happen. Any help will be greatly appreaciated. I did not mention the name of the place because I was not sure if I am allowed to.
Thank You
