a friend of mine came over today and gave me this little guy, she knew how much i needed a SHTCT, although i wouldnt call him a carrot tail just yet, but i am fairly certain the spots at the base of the tail will fade, this guys only about..3-4 1/2 months old.

if infact he does lose those spots, he'll be very busy last next season ;)

i've decided to name him after my first ever SHTCT, "Vandal"

he darkened up right away when i put him into his tub, but i cant wait to see what he grows up into

oh yeah, she said she got him from a Petco out in new jersey, so..Q.U.A.R.E.N.T.I.N.E. lol

heres a few pics

Cool. Looks like a classic Ray Hine lineage to me.

I'm curious what characteristics mark it as a "classic RH"? I'm new to leos and would be very interested in knowing how to tell the difference between a Hines SHCT and a line-bred one. Thanks!

Very nice shtct Dan. Definetely a carrot tail. Can Your friend be my friend too???

i say i dont think it is yet because of the spots breaking up the CT at the base, however, i do think they will fade out

The spotted head, spotless yellow body and tang / carrot on the tail are all characteristic of the original Hines line hypos.

The original line bred hypos almost never had carrot tails and very few had spotless bodies. I remember seeing those exceptional line bred hypos that had no body spots selling for over $1000 in the late '90s. These guys had spotted heads, and no carrot tail. Baldies were virtually unheard of. There are other lines of hypos such as the Nieves line that are often tied with aberrant / jungle patterning. Kelli H's Roxy http://www.hisss.net/collection_leos_tang.shtml is one.

Now virtually all the hypos on the market incorporate the Hines line of hypo which has been crossed extensively into the linebred hypo lines to combine the tang body color with the lack of spots and orange on the tail. Check out Albeys site: http://www.albeysreptiles.com/ I'm pretty sure his best of 2000 page is pre Hines.
