1.2 2023/2024 Hatch Peruvian Calico Snakes, Oxyrhopus fitzingeri. These are very interesting snakes, rare in U.S. collections. These snakes average three feet in length as adults and are extremely easy to handle. Though they are rear-fanged, I have never seen one offer to bite except as a feeding response. The hatchlings start off with a tan to beige ground color with a mottled pattern of black splattered mostly on the dorsum indeterminately. Some animals have more dark than light scales. As they grow, many individuals undergo an ontogenetic color change in which the tan becomes any color from buckskin to salmon to pumpkin orange. On some individuals the black lightens to a Gun Metal Blue. They have a white belly, which is highly iridescent. In the wild these snakes feed on a variety of prey including snakes, lizards, and rodents. Our adults eat thawed small mice and fuzzy rats. These are feeding on thawed, pink mice. (Adults pictured are not for sale.) $2,250/pair shipped; $3,100/trio shipped.
