    =====================

    I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

    So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

    But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

    Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

    I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
    Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

    And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

I'm a new member, and I couldn't find a place for Q&A, so I made this thread, hoping other new members could benefit from it as well.

If there is a word, phrase, or abbreviation you don't understand, please feel free to post it for a translation. :)

I have one right away... What does 'gravid' mean? I understand that it has something to do with breeding female snakes, but I don't know what it means, specificly.

Yes indeed that is what gravid means the snake or lizard or tort is pregnant with eggs or like rcarichter said fetus. ;)

:) Thank you both very much! That's probably an important thing to know, before I start buying animals. :eek: I don't need a hundred gecko babies crawling out of the box...

Pregnant actually implies a physical connection between a fetus and the mother, such as through a placenta. Because reptile fetuses are self-contained in eggs or egg-like membranes within the mother and are supported not through nutrients in the mother's blood stream, but by independently formed yolk sacs, we can't really call them pregnant per se. That's where the term gravid comes in.

It does, but it's difficult (in some cases impossible) to know a bird is gravid.

the best place to post your questions are in the forum where you read whatever you don't understand. This way if it is animal specific questions, you will get more detailed advice and/or an explanation

Well, the purpose of this thread was mostly to clear up confusions with herp-specific words and abbreviations. I know a few of them, but I know I'll run into some that I'm unfamiliar with. For example, a new member might not know what BP stands for. If they opened this thread, they would now know that it stands for Ball Python. If the BP has an RI, they will know that it has a Respiratory Infection. Lol I can't think of anything else to post. I'm pretty illiterate to herp lingo.

I think the point Randy was making is that most people would not think of looking for a thread like this here...and I tend to agree that it is better suited to other areas - whether in one of the topic specific forums, or in General Herp Talk.

Besides, it really doesn't have much to do with the language of this site...the same terms will be utilized on any reptile forum.

Well, the reason I put it here is because new members will see it when they post an intro. It would probably be harder for new members to find if it were somewhere else. And I didn't really know what to title it. Of course it isn't specific to the site, but I figured it was relevent enough... What is so wrong with this thread? I posted it trying to be helpful. I don't understand how it could be hurting anyone....

Nothing's wrong with the thread, it's just a little out of place. It's kinda like storing spices on your kitchen counter when you've got a spice rack specifically made for them. There are sections of Fauna that are better places to pose questions like this, because people who ask these types of questions are more likely to actually look for answers there rather than here, in introductions. Quite frankly, the introductions area gets very little traffic when compared to other, more specific sections.

Well, one of the reasons I posted it here is because I never saw any Q&A section... Though I could easily have missed it with so many subforums.

Doesn't have to be a specific Q&A section. It's assumed you'll go to the appropriate reptile thread (like general topics) and simply state your question as the thread title.
