I didnt know about this till the other day one of my school teachers shown me this search engine and how they pull up everything you ever do on the net so I thought i would share with you guys/gals I know some of you may not care but i think others will, www.google.com everything you ever put under you name will be pulled up on this thing if someone ever does a search on ya, employers freinds family other herpers etc. just out of curiosity i did a search on a couple of ramdomly puller names on this site and was suprised at what i found, some of their postings on other message boards etc. i just figured with the new policy for last names(im not debating it I fully understand it) some people might like to know this prior to posting, also from what my teach has been telling me there is a couple of search engines like this out there that are better with alot more info then this one, we tried one the other day but it wasnt working anyway just thought id share www.google.com |

Posted At 18:11:11 03/23/2001 Well, DUH! You mean you thought all this time that you could post messages anywhere and no one would be able to track you down? That's what search engines do. Look at the search engine on this site and then stretch your brain a little bit to figure out that there are most certainly search engines that do the same thing across EVERY web site on the net. So yes, if your Aunt Matilda wants to check up on where you've been posting messages, sure she can do it. What's your point? Uhh, aren't YOU violating the policy here yourself? |

Re: please read prior to posting here
Posted At 20:44:52 03/23/2001 OK, this blew up into a flame war in a hurry. Quite frankly, I'm trying to figure out why I should keep this thread in here. I made the rules I did based on the flak I got from a lot of people getting anonymous posts slammed against them, and also from complaints about people apparently posting 'pat on the back' messages for themselves anonymously. If you all didn't know it beforehand, know it now: Everything you post on the internet can be traced back to you. Depends on how much effort someone wants to expend to do so. And Jason, I guess I would like to know your point as well. I made the name rule to try to make people responsible for what they post here. If anyone does not want to stand up and take responsibility for their posts, then they can just go elsewhere. I am sorry that there are slick people out there that have made very sophisticated search engines that can pick information out of all websites, but it doesn't change the way I have decided to run this forum. I've been posting my name and email address on the web for about 5 years and have never had a problem (except SPAM mail, of course) from doing so. I have never been stalked, and never had someone send me a pestering email that couldn't be ignored and deleted. Oh, one thing in case you all didn't know this: One of the primary means companies get email addresses for SPAM data banks is from usenet groups. Basically anytime you post there, you can be assured that your email address is getting logged in some database to be sold to SPAMMERS. |

Posted At 21:08:34 03/23/2001 I think Jason was trying to say that you can check up on a dealer in question by doing a search via Google.com to read up on any activity accociated with that dealer. Takes more work than coming here, but there may be more info out there. I personally think this forum is a good place to go for checking on herp dealers, but I wish more people used it. Jeff |

Posted At 22:19:15 03/24/2001 Not that I was asked, but here's my take. Jason, I have read your posts for a while and I enjoy reading what you have to say. I like your style. In fact, besides your first name being the coolest, you choice in music is impeccable!! LOL. I think that your post about google is cool because not everybody is on the same plane or wavelength when it comes to time on the Internet. I've been on the Net for 6 years. Now on the other hand, my dad has just discovered that email is REALLY cool. Heck, I tried to tell him for years. He still is having problems attaching files to email. My point is, maybe George has advanced Internet skills or knowlege and didn't stop to think that some people STILL don't even own computers!!!!!! I am NOT defending George, I just think you guys were coming from different thoughts. You were looking out for the common man and I appreciate it. |

Re: please read prior to posting here
Posted At 22:33:19 03/24/2001 I think Jason's post has to do with concerns over names being available here for search engines to pick up. So maybe a little tip is in order for those that might not know of ways to fool the search engines. Anyone can cloak their name and baffle search engines by just doing a little innocent character substitution. For instance, posting Rich Zuch0wski (using the numeric zero ['0'], instead of the character oh ['o']), will baffle nearly all search engines trying to get a hit on 'Rich Zuchowski'. And yet everyone reading it will not stumble on it at all knowing whom is being referred to. I'm sure there are other creative ways to do the same thing, but you get the general idea. |

Re: please read prior to posting here
Posted At 07:20:16 03/25/2001 you got it Rich pretty much my reasoning for posting that is I never knew it was so simple I didnt mean to come down hard on Goerge I just didnt apreciate the sarcasim in his post when I felt I was trying to be helpful and maybe make some people aware of something I never knew and maybe they didnt ether, I am a regular on the forums and I wouldnt post something I wont back up but personally some stuff I would rather keep within the herp community and not have it be the main topic at Thanksgiving dinner, I was kind of shocked the first time I did a search on "Just Dum's" something like 70 posts came up anything from posts on this board to posts on kingsnake, various pages on my site and some on differant boards from way back when I first go on the net, i just simple thought it was something people should know because i know there is others like me who dont mind all of us seeing but would rather not have family employers etc who have no idea the first thing about reptiles much less understand any of this drill them about it,I hope this clears up some of my reasoning for posting this anyway thanks you guys, Goerge I apoligize for the harse words I just didnt apreciate the sarcasim, Jason |
