here lately i guess because were coming back inot shipping seasons I have seen a ton of post about shipping with UPS and I must say if your going to ship with them your only asking for trouble, I used to work there for two years the envirment in the building I worked was very stressful, people would get pissed and kicked boxes throw them use them as stepping stools, ive seen people that loaded the feeder(full size rigs) trucks that run from city to city pack small flimsy boxes on the bottom of the pile and put heavy 70-80 pounders on top of them, the buildings have conveyer belts running all the way through them ive seen boxes get jammed in these or hung up on the edges and ripped to shreds, imagine if a snake was in one of those and got ripped up by the conveyer, so why take the chance?????

I worked for them back in 1973 part time while I was going to school. No way I would send anything live through that company, not even a cockroach. I couldn't imagine an animal being subjected to that. For that matter I can't believe I subjected myself to that noise dust and overall lousy work environment for about eight months.

Even though it was not herp related, I have had more UPS second day packages arrive 3rd or 4th day than I have 2nd day. I would NEVER ship anything alive UPS and I would definitely not let anyone ship me a herp UPS. I have actually had good luck with USPS express mail...but I think almost every post office varies with what they do...

NICE! It's an ex UPS employee post!

My Position: Loader\Part time Sup.
Tour of duty: 1987-1990, Van Nuys, Ca. Twilight Sort
# of packages intentionally mis handled: More than 10....less than 500.
# of packages SEEN intentionally mis handled.......1000's
You folks ought to see what can happen when a conveyor jams with 5000 packages behind it....something is gonna give.......and then there is this "explosion" when the log jam breaks....really something to see!
Packages everywhere! DAMAGED packages!

I did, however, use them last week and got lucky, I guess! Guess I didn't fully learn my lesson in that sh*t brown hell! Gotta roll the dice once in a while.

Airborne is preferred!

You gotta realize, any company that makes their employees stick to a STRICT time schedule, actually timing their employees, has got to have an astronomical number of disadvantages. I have never even considered them as a shipping source! Although I have never worked for them, someone I know still does. When he found out I was a reptile breeder , he said, "I certainly hope you don't use UPS to ship your stock!" I assured him that I did not. As I have heard, ANYTHING is better than UPS for live shipping.

sorry to break the chain of UPS bashing but I just recieved a snake shipped to me UPS next day and it arrived in perfect cond. I may point out it only had to travel about 130 miles. I have been in the distribution business for 19 years and shipped and recieved a zillion boxes and over all the service is reliable.

just my 2 cents.

p.s. the driver in my area is a total goon!! LOL

I use UPs overnight on a consistant basis, keyword is overngiht, this puts the package in their hands and through the system as fast as possible. To date and well over a hundred packages in the last year, the rate of failure to deliver or a damaged box or animal has been ZERO. This is a situation where you get what you pay for, if you are paying top dollar on an animal, the last thing you should do is try to save a few bucks on the shipping. Overnight service is approximately $25 - $45 depending on how large box is and where it is going to in the country. you also need to deal with a shipper who has the common sense to package the animals with the full intent that they will be bounced around, tossed and kicked as well as a host of other abuses that may take place, so I pack my animals so tightly that they do not move but are confortable and not squashed and a heat source is provided dependent on time of year. The abuse is also cut down dramatically when it is going overnight, this puts these packages in a priority category and if you have some shipper sending any animal second day, then they should not be dealing with live animals at all.
There are only bad packers and cheepskates looking to save money, the ones truely caring for these animals pay the extra and get the animal next day bright and healthy. I use this service even during the cold winters of Cleveland ohio and ship country wide and anyone who takes a few minutes to properly pack the animals can do the same. If anyone would like to learn how, feel free to email me.

OUCH!! That was a shot! I don't consider myself a "bad packer" OR a cheapskate. (Please, note the spelling!)
~ >>Tooting my own horn<< Everyone who has received orders from me has commented on my methods and the great condition of the animal they receive. And "looking to save money" is NOT on my list of priorities. I live in New England and have been raising and breeding herps for longer than I care to mention. I attempt to send all my dragons overnight, but things do happen! I pack in such a way to compensate for anything that MIGHT go wrong and delay the shipping. When this does happen, my guys STILL arrive healthy, bright and NOT STRESSED! I even put photos of what is IN the box on the box, which helps people to connect with the animal. If they know exactly what is in a package, they are less likely to be abusive.
~UPS can do as much damage overnight as they can two day. My information comes from someone on the inside of UPS...they know what goes on.
~Nope...Sorry...I've seen what UPS has done to REGULAR packages I have received. There is no way I would take that chance with any of my babies. Shipping is risky enough as it is.
~ OK, if you get lucky, that's great. I hope your luck holds out for the sake of the creatures involved.

I've used UPS for herps plenty of times and had no problems with their overnight service. I know other herpers that use UPS also without any problems. We've done thousands of UPS orders with absolutely no problems.
