What a morning. Here is the story. Strictly reptiles in south florida caught this gentleman Robert Carr aka Bob Carr on video tape last week stealing 2 albino red ear slider subadults from there facility--in an attempt to get him to caome back the follwing week(he lives in michigan) they offered him some rare pythons at almost half price--se this morning with myself and some other local dealers there he showed up to get his "great Deal!!"-anyhow--little did he know that everyone there was onto him, and just acted as pleasant as they could. A little while later about 7 police officers showed up and stood in the office watching the survelance monitors--i was in the boa and python room at the time with the criminal, and received a phone call on my cellular from the owner telling me and another friend to come to the office, and leave carr alone in the boa room--another employee of the facility was also called out so mr carr would be in the room alone. so in the office watching the survelance camera--was the owner of strictly reptiles--me-alfredo from xtreme reptiles--amir soleymani from snakes at sunset and 7 police officer--it was quite funny actually--this dumb baffoon of a theif looked to make sure the coast was clear(not knowing that there was a small army watching his every move!!)-and sure enough had to push his luck---shoved a 3 ft pastel jungle ball python into his pocket and started to head for the door--when he walked the cops grabbed him--put the cuffs on and asked if one of us would search him(most cops don't like snakes)-i volunteered happily and removed not only the pastel fromhis front pocket, but also a small spider tortoise!!!-anyhow-he got arrested and is now in jail waiting for arraignment--he also is being charged with trying to sell the albino red ear sliders that he stole previously, as well as federal charges for selling reptiles without a permit, and more than likely three counts of grand theft. Well i for one am glad to see this guy taken away as we suspect him of stealing from our store and i know of at least one more south reptile florida that he has stolen from--scumbags like this are what give the reptile trade a bad name---he should be banished completely, and anyone with any information about this person please post as we are trying to get a list of possible animals stolen by him, so when the police search his house in michigan, they will hopefully be able to possibly recover some stolen merchandise. He is already up to 3 counts of grand theft and 2 counts of dealing in stolen merchandise--lets see if we can get that number up a little higher and bury this loser in some prison somewhere with a big well endowed cell mate---click the link below into your browser for a nice pic of robert in handcuffs getting put into a police car. We are working on getting a nice clean pic of his face so we can post that as well for all to see, but i am sure alot of you know him already. We get shoplifted alot, and it makes me feel good to see this inbred pig get whats coming to him-Ben http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=233836&a=1736177&p=47433876&Sequence=0&res=high |

.html Posted At 08:29:39 04/30/2001 Bustig a thief is all fine and dandy, but you ought to be careful about pushing the "selling reptiles without a permit" bit. He can, and will bring to his attorneys attention, that 99% of the people dealing in reptiles is not liscenced with usda. It could lead to a stronger enforcement of this rule. While this would be profitable for the business' that are too large to operate without a permit(importers mostly), it could cause the rest of us to visit with an agent every 3 months and be subjected to surprise visits(in our home). |

.html Posted At 10:06:27 04/30/2001 Jason, USDA doesn't regulate reptiles (yet). Regulation of reptiles is left up state Fish/Game Wildlife services. The only reptiles USDA is concerned with is turtles under 4 inches, which can be sold for educational and scientific purposes only. Everyone dealing in reptiles should do so legally so that this embattled hobby doesn't get any more grief than it already does. Brian |

.html Posted At 10:21:59 04/30/2001 Exotic Animal Dealers- Anyone importing, buying, selling, or trading animals foreign to the United States(wild or domesticated) must be licensed. This is stated in the usda's licensing and registration under the animal welfare act. If legality is important to you, you better be giving your local agent a call. |

.html Posted At 18:23:11 04/30/2001 Jason, ok then, I'm confused. I had a run in with a USDA enforcement officer about 4 months ago. He said my name was coming up on his lists of unlicensed mammal breeders. It was there because I had sold some S.A. short-tailed opossums at an auction. I explained that I only brokered the animals and had only done it about 3 times. He said it didn't matter, if I wanted to sell any more opossums I had to get a license. I told him I would just stop selling opossums because I wasn't making much off of them anyway. He said no problem. I then asked what I needed to do about selling reptiles. His words, "I could care less about reptiles, that's Fish and Game's department." Maybe that only applies in FL, but he was adament(sic) about it. "USDA does not monitor reptiles at this time." Just what I've been told, straight from the horses mouth. |

.html Posted At 20:15:51 04/30/2001 I just got an import/export license and asked if I needed a USDA license for reptiles....The lady said "no", USDA only regulates breeding mammals and pocket pets (i.e. sugar gliders, possums, etc.) She said I only needed a permit from the state fish, game and wildlife... |

.html Posted At 20:27:33 04/30/2001 Brian is correct. The USDA's jurisdiction over animal dealers is rooted in the Animal Welfare Act (7 U.S.C. 2131 et. seq.). As per Section 2, Item g, of the AWA- the scope of the AWA is limited to, and I quote, "[...]any live or dead dog, cat, monkey (nonhuman primate mammal), guinea pig, hamster, rabbit, or such other warm-blooded animal, as the Secretary may determine is being used, or is intended for use, for research, testing, experimentation, or exhibition purposes or as a pet; but such term excludes horses not used for research purposes and other farm animals, such as, but not limited to livestock or poultry, used or intended for use as food or fiber, or livestock or poultry used or intended for improving animal nutrition, breeding, management or production efficiency, or for improving the quality of food or fiber. With respect to a dog the term means all dogs including those used for hunting, security, or breeding purposes;" |
