His style was very pushy, i asked him a few questions about a snake, then put in a offer of $250 shipped. He said he would not answer my questions until he had $275+ship in his hand. So then he agreed hed sell it for $260 shipped. And I asked him the usually qustions again, like; eating, healthy, any mites, any problems, ect. He said why do i ask so many questions and that I was trouble. I said I need to know its health and its that simple. Now hes selling the tiger retic for $245shipped that I was going to get. Hes a very pushy guy, useing caps like hes yelling some words. I dont like him at all and thought you guys should know his style. |

Oh yeah, and used ALL CAPS in his emails! Definitely a serious offense! Get real! All in favor of the webmaster deleting these sorts of juvenile messages say "AYE!" |

More or less he was complaining that I stuck up for this Jay guy. Well if Mr. Gubitz if you just go up a couple and read you'll see that I said I did not know either one of you and that Jay was stating his opion his being key word. I did not say one thing negative about either one of you. So before you e-mail me to bitch know what was actually said. |

Re: THE SNAKE PIT,Neil Gubitz. very very pushy and
6084.html Posted At 21:41:16 07/19/2001 If Jay only asked simple questions like health, feeding, etc. and this guy Neil gets pissy with him, that is completely retarded. When someone buys something, they have the right to ask as much questions as they would like as long as they were reasonable. I do this when I buy a snake. Ask things like" what are you feeding it, how often do you feed, live or dead, etc?" Those are normal questions that should get normal answers. I could care less if neil is from NY. Treating someone respectable is not a culture thing, it is called common sense. I totally see Jay's viewpoint. Let us hope that these two can work things out. |

Re: THE SNAKE PIT,Neil Gubitz. very very pushy and
6105.html Posted At 14:58:31 07/20/2001 Anyone who is not prepared nor willing to answer questions of all kinds shouldn't be selling squat. No matter how inane or stupid you think it is there is no such thing as a stupid question. For those who think that there is any reason to be rude and not completely attentive to your customers needs is wrong. Regardless of where you came from doesn't matter, being polite is being polite. Just remember you might be the 1st point of contact for someone new to the hobby and how you carry yourself has an impact. Being rude might turn them away and the more people in this hobby the better. So if your not prepared to talk to people who aren't reptile experts like you and might ask questions you think beneath your response, DO NOT SELL REPTILES.....! Ciao. Andrew Potts |

He emailed me this morning and was basically being a prick to me. Why? I did not rag on him at all as you will read and ended my post with a positive note, saying that we should hope these guys work this out. Then I get this little bitchy email. Andrew Pott's post underneath mine sums it all up. Neil, bro, you may be a cool guy and have a good reptutation, and that is great. I don't know you and can't pass any judgement on you. 6180.html Posted At 02:27:07 07/22/2001 I have seen some good points on both sides of this debate, but... I have had several kids e-mail me on animals...Most of the time they don't just ask, "What is the health?", "What is it eating?", "How old is it?"...etc. They wear you out with things like, "Can I put this in the same cage as my Ostritch?", or "Since I don't like watching mice die, can I feed it crickets?". That stuff wears me out and I just get tired of it. I seriously doubt someone trying to get money from someone for an animal would refuse to answer simple, ligit questions...only crazy questions like the ones I stated. Neil...I'm with you on this one. Re: THE SNAKE PIT,Neil Gubitz. very very pushy and
6190.html Posted At 14:47:12 07/22/2001 In response to those who think that answering silly questions from kids(or maybe adults) is crazy and they get tired of it, here's some advice. "PLEASE GET OUT OF REPTILES IMMEDIETALY". The young person(or maybe adult) who is asking the supposed silly question doesn't think it's stupid. How else are they supposed to learn about herps...? I know all the people on the net who have that attitude were born experts and never had to learn from anybody else. Unfortunately there are those like myself who weren't born experts and had to learn the old fashion way. Talking with those persons who did have the knowledge and eventually applying that information to my own herps. And beleive it or not, alot of the older herpers had to learn the old fashioned way, thru trial and error. Just because the young people nowadays have so many ways to get herp information(on-line,pet stores, herp clubs), doesn't mean that your responsibility as a herper to teach and help the young(or maybe adults) is negated. One day this young(or maybe adult) person is going to have the money to buy herps if they choose so. Instead of possibly turning young(and maybe older) people away from herps becuase at the time they ask the questions you think are stupid and crazy, answer them and make that young(or maybe older) person feel like herps are the coolest thing around(which they are by the way). I know everybody who sells herps would like all possible customers to be experts like themselves and ask the really important questions but thats not the case. There's a chance that the people inquiring(young or old) are new to the hobby and look to us for information, not just about the animal thats for sale, but god forbid, maybe about herps in general. The mindset being that since we are selling animals we should have more knowledge about herps than they do. As iv'e stated in earlier post, when you sell herps theres a chance you might be the 1st point of contact that the novice herper(young or old) has. Here's a tip, if your not prepared to willingly give your time and expertise to all who inquire, including those who ask stupid and silly questions, get the heck out of the hobby. Leave it to the herpers who will gladly spend as much time as needed to answer all questions. Believe me when i say there are lots of us out there who are willing to do just that. The more people(young or old) we encourage to get into the hobby the better. That will manifest itself in two ways. One is the more people into herps the more money being infused into the herp industry. Two, the more people involved with herps means it's less likely city, county, state, or even federal levels of goverment will limit or restrict our ability to posess herps. To me the second one being the most important. The more herpers there are, the greater our combined voice is should it be necessery to fight the powers that be. Therefore it's less likely to be ignored by the powers that could effect our wonderful hobby. Again if your not willing to enthusiastically answer all questions regardless of how stupid or silly you think they are, or go the extra mile to help out budding herpers, "PLEASE GET OUT OF REPTILES". Ciao. |

Andrew...Perhaps you haven't seen my website to see what I sell...more...
6195.html Posted At 19:36:25 07/22/2001 In response to: "In response to those who think that answering silly questions from kids(or maybe adults) is crazy and they get tired of it, here's some advice. "PLEASE GET OUT OF REPTILES IMMEDIETALY". " You jump to conclusions to fast and know a little too much for your own good there Andy. Those questions were just examples of ones asked. You wanna know what questions I get smarty pants??? Try this one! "I've kept some rattlers I've caught in my backyard before. Are those Black Forest Cobras really mean?" Here's my usual question back to them... "How old are you?" You wanna know what I get most of the time? "I'm 16...17" If you go and read my website, it clearly states that I only sell venomous to those 21 and over!!! If you can't read this at that age, you should be in a special school...not buying snakes! You want more??? Here's a serious question asked to me not too long ago...This is no joke! Prospective Buyer - "I want that retic you're selling. I have a couple of questions." Me - "Great...what questions do you have?" Prospective Buyer - "Do they get very big?" Me - "I'm sorry...I can't sell this snake to you!" My point being...There are uneducated questions, and there are STUPID questions. If you have to ask something like that, you don't need a snake! Period! Tell me you would have patience with that all day long! You sure talk the big talk, but when you deal with Taipans, Cobras, King Browns, etc., and you have KIDS e-mailing you all day, every day, trust me...YOU would get tired of it too buddy! So please don't go running your mouth about me getting out of the snake business. I've been in it for a while! Patrick |

Re: THE SNAKE PIT,Neil Gubitz. very very pushy and
6197.html Posted At 22:47:48 07/22/2001 Umh pat? Maybe the retic buyer really wanted the snake. Maybe he or she really did not know whether it got big or not. I thought it was a valid question. I just bought two honduran boa constrictors and had to ask how big they got. Because there are dwarf species of boas out there. There are also dwarf species of retics out there. And if you can read the rules of the forum. It says for you to include your last name. |

Re: THE SNAKE PIT,Neil Gubitz. very very pushy and
6198.html Posted At 22:56:37 07/22/2001 Ritchie, Perhaps you are reading my post wrong..by the way, I posted my last name...You had a valid question in asking how big does that snake get. I don't know myself. I believe you misread my post...as it is easy for people to do. The kid didn't ask me how big retics get. He asked me IF they get big! I'm sorry...if you don't have the ability to at least look up and read about things like that, you have no business with one...and I really don't have time for that. What if I sold that snake to him? Would you sell the longest snake on the planet to someone who asks, "Do they get big?". If you would, you are foolish. Even if the kid did know if they got big...someone that would ask questions like that DON'T NEED TO HAVE THAT KIND OF SNAKE! They need a corn...milk...ball python...etc. I also noticed that you didn't say anything about the deadly ones...did you conveniently leave that out?..or do you still think those are valid questions for a 16 year old to ask wanting to buy DEATH?!!...LITERALLY! Thank You, Patrick HUGHETT!!! North Texas Reptiles |

Re: THE SNAKE PIT,Neil Gubitz. very very pushy and
6207.html Posted At 01:57:42 07/23/2001 No I did not conveniently leave anything out. I don't know anything about those cobras you mentioned. And if I wanted to buy them I would have asked some questions as well. But I don't deal with hots. And I don't even bother with the kids. I answer all there questions but I do not sell to them. My point is the only stupid question is the one that is not asked. How can we learn if we don't ask. When I first started out....I had nothing but "stupid questions" And no need to get HYPER!!!! about your last name. I was just stating the fact that you did not post it. If you look at other threads that you posted. You will find that you did not post your last name on alsmost all if not all of them. Tho post on top of this one is the first one I see with your last name. |

6215.html Posted At 08:01:09 07/23/2001 ok heres what i think of this : 1..if some one is going to buy an animal before they ask anything they should read up on it(to get the questions they realy shouldnt be asking out of the way) 2...i beleive feeding, age, has it bred yet, an questions of that nature are verrry valid an should be given respect 3.....i dont beleive do retics get big? is valid if they had done there reading they would know ....now if they had asked "is this one of the dwarfs that only reach around 7-8 feet? or is it one of the big boys that reach 20+ feet?... that i beleive to be very valid... 4........i agree with patrick in some areas and i agree with jay in some areas ...but we do not know what types of questions he was asking so i cant side with him or neil but it looks as if they worked things out an seeing that makes me glad to be in the herp bizz |

Re: THE SNAKE PIT,Neil Gubitz. very very pushy and
6220.html Posted At 11:44:22 07/23/2001 I would like to say that none of my post in this thread have been directed at anybody specific. They have been vague for a reason and that reason is to avoid someone feeling like they are being singled out for criticism. I feel Patrick thinks that one of my post made earlier in this thread was directed specifically at him. How i know this is my name was in his post. I would like to inform everybody here that if my post was intended for Patrick, i would have stated so in big letters. I'm no shrinking violet when it comes to telling someone how i feel. I guess the reason he thinks this(my post being directed at him), was the similarity of words i used to describe my thoughts. If one were to look at my 1st post(before Patrick chimed in), you would see that i descibed my thoughts in almost the same manner. Well almost the same. You problably noticed its a bit long winded compared to the 1st post. Or maybe my 1st post was long winded and my second post was a short novel. Sorry i've digressed, lets get back to the matter at hand. Neither of my post were directed at anyone specific, but unfortunately someone took it that way. The point both post were trying to make and now this post is: there are no questions asked that are to stupid or silly or whatever term you want to use. They deserve to be answerd and in a serious fashion. Yes i will be the 1st to admit that some people ask questions that seem out there, but if you're tired of those questions stop selling reptiles. To me its a no brainer. I'm sure anybody who deals in herps would like it if the questions being ask of them were coming from experts like themselves. Well the reality is most questions are going to be coming from novice, amateurs. That being the case i bet they will ask questions that seem to be ridiculas to those of us in "the know". But the person asking the question doesn't think so, otherwise they wouldn't be asking. As i've said numerous times, if your not willing to answer "ALL" questions, even those that seem totally retarded, "STOP SELLING REPTILES". Anybody who isn't willing to do so is doing more harm to this industry than good. In closing i would incourage everyone to look at my previous post so they can get an idea of my thoughts on this subject. Also they can see for themselves and determine if i was targeting somebody specific. Ciao. Andrew Potts |

6266.html Posted At 16:58:12 07/24/2001 Folks, I KNOW I'm responsible for starting this whole mess, but, I would just like to say that Jay and I have TOTALLY patched up our differences (which was really just miscommunication)! BUT, some of your threads REALLY made me see the light! ESPECIALLY the threads from Andrew Potts!! In the scheme of things, I TRULY believe that he is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!! I'm 49 years old, and, after reading Andrew's threads, it made me think back to when I was a TOTAL NOVICE!! I remember once asking the question, "Can a Python eat crickets?" I'm SURE that if I heard that question asked of me now, I'd probably smile, laugh, and remember! Then I WOULD ANSWER THE QUESTION PROFESSIONALLY! But, when I asked it (at 15 years old), I HAD NO IDEA!! I'm just very glad the EXPERT I asked it of, was kind enough NOT to laugh, but sat me down and gave me a history lesson about Boids, I thank him A LOT!! I guess what I'm trying to say, is that this little thread is my Catharsis!! I don't think I will EVER laugh at ANY question again!! Well, I might giggle a little, BUT I'D STILL ANSWER IT! Andrew is right! That is the ONLY WAY we can increase the number of KIDS entering this hobby, and, as you know, they WON'T be kids for long!! We HAVE TO build the foundation of this business in order for ALL OF US to survive and thrive! OK...Stick a fork in me, I'm done! Anybody want to ask me ANYTHING??? lol ......Neil Gubitz |
