Flat Rate or Caculated Shipping?

We operate an online store where we sell primarily reptiles. As of right now we use shopping cart software that lets us charge the customer an exact shipping rate through FedEx. My question is wether using this system or incorporating a Flat Rate shipping charge for everyone whould appeal more to the customer. I can see the benfits of both but would like to hear other opinions.

I guess it would depend on what it is you are shipping. Someone that buys a corn snake for instance might be a little put off if they have to pay teh same as someone buying a 5 foot boa. Maybe a scaled shipping charge could be arranged... large animals one charge, small ones another... just an idea
