Genetics: spider pieds?

How do you get co-dom or dominate & recessive mixes? for instance a pastel or spider piebald?
Both parents have to be at least piebald hets if they babies are going to have both pied and spider traits, yes? so if you bred them and they produced a pied of some sort, both of them are proven hets?
I know genetics somewhat, but I want to check to make sure I'm not missing anything obvious.

Lets just say we are doing Spider Pieds.

You would need to breed a Spider to a Pied. All of the offspring would be either Spider Het Pieds or Het Pieds (the normal looking babies would be the Het Pieds).

You would then need to breed your Spider Het Pieds to a Pied or Het Pied. Your best bet would be to use a Pied and not a Het Pied.
