The dark side of Corucia

Leeway Corucia Research Center (LCRC)

As wonderful Corucia can be in nuturing and raising not only their own young, but adopted individuals as well, Sometimes things can take a dark side.

Occasionally, one hears reports of attack on babies or even cannibalism. Largely , the cannibalism is seen from stillborn births.

Wright (1991) mentions a loss within a Circulus due to cannibalism.

Sprackland (1993) mentions this as well even though there were many
hiding places in the enclosure.

Groves (1994) from the Philadelphia Zoo reported neonate losses at
59%

Jones (2005) reported a young female Corucia less than one year that
found a way from a huge enclosure that was subdivided
into two different Circulus areas. She found a way to get
through the floor of the top enclosure and into the
bottom where she was found torn apart.

Jones (2007) reported a male unexpectedly becoming aggressive to a
newborn and mother skink in an
established circulus. The female and baby had to be
removed.
