DeKay Brown snake wanted
My son is dying to get a snake after some research we’ve agreed on a DeKay brown snake but have no idea where to buy one, anyone have any ideas?

All native nonvenomous species of snake are protected in Georgia. A Dekay's snake is a slug eater anyway and would probably not be a good candidate for captivity to begin with.
I suggest looking into other colubrids, such as western hognose or tricolored milks (except for scarlet and scarlet kingsnakes, which are native and therefore prohibited as pets in Georgia). Nelson's milksnakes are small, brightly colored, and friendly. |
I agree, I would go for a California kingsnake, or a species of garter snake non native to Georgia.

In Georgia, it is illegal to kill a nonvenomous snake (O.C.G.A. 27-1-28). The misdemeanor offense is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Wow. Just read this. I wish we had this type of enforcement here. I would never knowingly advise anyone to do something outside of their state laws that I did not see that they were inquiring from Georgia was an oversight. I am very happy that Georgia has such strict laws. |
Apparently in Georgia you can’t have a non-venomous native snake as a pet but you can have a venomous snake that is native as a pet. Interesting.

Looks like milksnakes are prohibited too : (

What about Corn Snakes, very easy to keep and quite tolerant and docile, not sure of the laws in Georgia...But Corn Snakes are a fantastic beginner snake.
