Hello Thomas,
The answer to your question isn't a simple "this or that is the best". Different keepers have different needs. You should ask yourself what works best for you??.. For me, I used to only use glass aquariums and they work great. However, as my collection expanded I spent an enormous amount of time cleaning and messing with light and heating via timers and thermostats. A couple years ago I purchased my first rack system for my adult milksnakes. I could not be happier with the quality of the construction of the racks, the space they save,and the time they save!
That said, if you only are housing a single animal it's probably not practical to go out and spend $300-400 on a rack system and thermostat. Sweater boxes with holes drilled/melted are cheap and do an excellent job housing small colubrids. 10gal aquariums are good too. Just make sure you get a LOCKING lid for your aquarium.
