I have a wild caught tegu that I ended up taming down and now he pretty much has free roam of the house when he is out of his enclosure.. Absoultly amazing pet and smart, like probaby smarter than my dog lol.
Id say try to handle him... Use welding gloves at first and see how he reacts. Put a towel on your lap, sit down with him, not holding him down or nothing, just loosely holding him in place.. If his mouth isn't gaped and he isnt try to take tour fingers off, remove obe glive and pet him a bit... Just like with any reptile the more you handle them and they realize you arent iut to hurt them the more relaxed they are. It took about two weeks for me to be able to free handle my guy and when I first brought him home he wanted to take my head off.. I now even trust him with my wife and kids...Good luck and enjoy!!
