Likely, the grant includes a less than extravagant stipend for the grad student and the rest is costs to do research (travel, equipment, subs to extra journals, etc).
Maybe basic biology is atypically lucrative, but I recall grad stipends coming out somewhere around minimum wage, and that's keeping only to the work at hand and not trying to learn anything extra in the process.
