That sure looks like a hindrance to predator avoidance.
I wonder if maybe predators don't actually clue in to something that looks so foreign. I don't know either way, but I don't suppose that all predators notice artificial-looking objects in the same way that humans do. I have snakes that will strike at anything moving, and nothing that isn't moving, whether that thing is a mouse or a hide box.
