BUSHNELL
A 20 year-old man suffered multiple snakebites while stealing venomous snakes from a Bushnell residence early today, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.
After being bitten on the hand, the man went to a nearby Wal-Mart, where employees found him bleeding, according to a sheriff's incident report. A Sumter deputy sheriff searched his vehicle and found boxes containing five snakes.
The man is suspected of breaking into a shed and stealing two rock rattlesnakes, a Honduran milk snake, a rat snake and a Southern hognose snake between 2 and 3 a.m., according to the report. He was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center for antivenom treatment.
The Sheriff's Office was investigating the suspected burglary and theft, Lt. Bobby Caruthers said. Police had not arrested the man because he remained in the hospital for observation, Caruthers said.
