Ive been working at a reptile rescue booth in hamburg for a couple of years now and the biggest reasons we do adoption fees are to
1. pay for any vet bills
2. ensure it is going to a home that will be able to financially support the animal.
3. support the rescue
we also require an adoption contract be filled out first to again, ensure these animals go to proper homes. If i have to turn away a potential adopter, then so be it. Heck one time a guy walking up to the table had a sri lankan cobra in a tub with him and was asking for "wholesale lots" on the rescued ball pythons. I immediatly knew this guy was a cobra fan who probably has a king that eats snakes. Sure enough thats what his intentions were, so lesson learned, even adoption fees will not turn away unwanted adopters, thats why you have adoption contracts.
