Can you identify this turtle???

We are helping identify this turtle some friends found. I believe it is just a box turtle. They found it on the side of the road and it is very tame. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Eastern Box Turtle, most likely a female.

I agree with Jessica. An easy way to check the sex is to look at the eyes and the plastron (bottom shell). If the eyes are bright red and the plastron is concave (curves in) it is a male. If the eyes are brown (sometimes slight red) and the shell is convex (curves out) is is a female.

^ It's best to go by the shape of the plastron since eye color isn't always the truthful way to sex them. I own a female with red eyes and I've caught other females with red eyes before as well.

I agree, but it is helpful if you have a misshapen plastron like one of my females has. I thought she was a male with a vitamin deficiency in the beginning, but after rehabbing her and seeing her lay eggs, I realized that she was "deformed". We do the best we can with what we have...
