Well, per CDC guidelines, the physician should not have ordered the test (footnote about 'close contact'):

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019...-criteria.html

As of a week ago, CA was (unsurprisingly, given the situation) short on test kits (https://www.upi.com/Health_News/2020...6101582835877/). Seems a reasonable idea to have a protocol that does not involve testing people who are unlikely to have the virus, given a shortage situation. That nurse should understand that.

Well, how long has the CDC had to prepare for this? It's not like this snuck up on them or anything.

Two days short of two months since anyone even knew this was a virus. In China. With no deaths:

The first US case was thirteen days ago.

Uh, I think it's been longer than that.

You're right. Bad math on my part.

I wonder (not really; it is pretty obvious) about the backlash that would happen if CDC tested (and footed the bill for, as I understand they're doing) every sniffling person who convinced a physician to test them. Is the policy to test only those who need it so unreasonable (high cost of health care, and government waste, and so on)? I mean, if we want to save lives from contagious illness, we'd have -- just for starters -- 100% federally funded influenza vaccinations and admit to hospital every confirmed case of flu.

Lee County resident has died from coronavirus, 3 new cases, 1 other dead in Florida

A Lee County resident in Southwest Florida has died of coronavirus Friday, a case considered presumptively positive according to the Florida Department of Health’s tweet.

Two Florida residents have died due to coronavirus (COVID-19), and six Florida residents are confirmed at least presumptively positive cases in the state, according to the Florida Department of Health Friday night.

According to the health department, an individual in their seventies tested presumptivley positive for COVID-19 in Lee County and died after returning from an international trip. The destination has not been released by the health department.

This comes just hours after Gov. Ron DeSantis announced no new cases in the state during a Friday afternoon press conference from Collier County department of health.

There are now three presumptively positive confirmed cases, bringing the total to six in Florida.

There are two new cases in Broward County considered to be isolated. One Broward patient is a a 75-year-old male, and the other patient is a 65-year-old male, both are confirmed presumptively positive. Both patients are isolated and will remain in isolation until they are cleared by health professionals.

The third new case is the deceased patient in Lee County. The other deceased patient is a previously announced case out of Santa Rosa County.

I was watching a video where someone was saying that where you have a death from this virus, then that means the person who died was likely infected about a month or more ago.

Damn, I really hate the thought that Connie is going to have a dentist and his assistant sticking their fingers in her mouth in about 2 weeks. She was at the dentist office today (Friday) to have to old bridge removed and impressions taken for the new one to be made. Which doesn't make me feel all that warm and fuzzy neither. Yeah, they had gloves on, but that doesn't make me feel any better at all.

BTW, sometimes it pays off to be a squeaky wheel. Connie found out while at the dentist office that both the dentist and the assistant are normally off work on Fridays. So they went the extra mile to get her in and get that preliminary work done for her. They worked on her for a solid two hours. Honestly I was shocked when she told me. I didn't think people really did that sort of thing any longer to go out of their way for someone else.

I wouldn't be too worried about a dental visit. You're not coming into contact with a lot of different people.

Now, this is how hundreds of people get exposed. I doubt the surfaces in the rail cars are wiped down or disinfected regularly.
