Tapatalk? Its free to enable on forums/install

Has anybody considered tapatalk for the forum? Rich? Im using it with Karas forum ( bloodpythons) and HECK its nice to use versus the mobil browser. If participation would increase for those who use the app on forums. Heck, id personally love it because it makes everything speedy!!

works with vbulletin too, and many other formats.

Just a thought

Actually some people solicited this idea on my CornSnakes.com forum a while back so I ran it past my programmer.

He advised me against it. He felt that my sites were fairly stable and secure right now, so adding in any sort of complex and convoluted third party coding could open the sites up to exploits by hackers. He also mentioned that he does not use mobile devices to access the internet, so he would not be able to support the code if problems developed. Honestly, I don't use mobile devices neither, so I could not even respond to problems someone might have. And quite honestly, I likely never will. I am using a 27 inch screen right now, and there are times when I wish I had a larger screen. To try to do this stuff on a dinky little screen using a dinky little keyboard would drive me insane. And probably blind me. Seriously have you seen all the people holding their mobile devices up to their eyes and squinting at the screens? In years to come, THIS will become known as the "squinty generation". My advice for the younger generation is to get into a career in ophthmology and optometry. I predict that this will be a booming business in 20 years or so as people's eyes begin failing prematurely from the strain. Not to mention having a radio frequency transmitter source constantly up near your head certainly can't be all that good for you.

Sorry, but I just haven't seen any overwhelming reason to move my sites in that direction. Maybe so in the future, as I become more and more a member of the dinosaur generation, but certainly not now.

Of course, I see that tablet screens and cell phone displays keep on getting bigger and bigger, so when the standard for them is a screen 24 inches or better, and a cell phone requires a backpack to carry it in, I guess this will cease to being an issue...

Given the number of forums that use Tapatalk, I doubt it poses any serious security risk. But I could be wrong.

As far as the ability to provide support couldn't you just provide it "as is" like you are doing with auctions? If there are problems, its not YOUR problem to fix. Though I doubt there would be much for maintenance as I'm pretty sure its just a 'set it and forget it' type of deal

I know I for one would greatly appreciate this forum being more mobile friendly. I hardly use my laptop anymore and do just about everything on my iPhone. Even if not via Tapatalk, any type of mobile version of the site would be appreciated.

If you think it over again and still feel it is not something you would like to do at this point, I understand. I just figured I would provide my opinion on the subject....

Thanks for reading!

Exclamation

I brought this topic up again with my programmer, and come to find out that it was darn lucky that we didn't enable Tapatalk earlier. Evidently one or more exploits in the Tapatalk code got quite a few message board sites compromised and caused them some messy problems from hackers. But from what my programmer tells me, these appear to have been resolved now.

So with that in mind, I asked him to install the Tapatalk interface code here, and it should be working now. But in the admin section, the switch to enable the Tapatalk code says this:

Quote:
Tapatalk for Mobile Web is our new offering of fast, efficient, cross platform mobile web experience for forums. Currently supports only basic Read-Only feature, with option to open discussion using Desktop version. Enable Mobile Web version of Tapatalk?
Not sure exactly what that means. To me, it infers that the site will be READ ONLY using Tapatalk from a mobile device. But someone else will have to test this. If so, seems kind of silly to me to have even gone through the trouble of installing the code if no one can actually participate via the mobile devices. But maybe I'm just reading that wrong. I can't understand why anyone would even need a "desktop version" of Tapatalk since on a desktop computer I would think most people would just use their regular browser.

Someone let me know, please.

Well, so far the only problem I see is that apparently someone registered through Tapatalk on my CornSnakes.com site and it appears to have completely bypassed the required field entries in that process. I've asked my programmer to look into it, and I've got that new registration held in limbo till I understand if this is a drawback or just some option that needs to be set correctly.

If this is a flaw in Tapatalk, I'm afraid that it will not be able to be used on this site because of the stringent registration requirements here.

I've never used Tapatalk; and was surprised when I got the prompts for it here. In reading the blurb, the offering that caught my eye was that search options would be enabled. That would be helpful. When I clicked to download the app, though, it wasn't a free option. It wasn't expensive, and I may still do it, but I'll want to see what the benefits are before deciding.

Well, there is one little wrinkle with this. I can't allow registrations via Tapatalk. Apparently registering that way bypasses the required profile fields (name and location) that are a requirement of registering on this site. So all registrations will have to be via more regular methods.

So, now that you have tapatalk installed, are you able to change the way forums are shown on the site IN tapatalk itself? Do you WANT the BOI more prominently displayed? Its hidden behind misc. at the moment, but folks using the app may find it easier to access if it were not in a sub section. Just a question/thought. I know its here, so I dont entirely mind either way.
