Worms?

Any thoughts on setting up containers and raising worms for reptile food? I saw the idea on another site.

It all depends

What king of worms do/are you trying to raise?

I have some experience with supers (zophobas). Not alot but enough to get you started.

I recently bought some silkworm eggs... We'll see how they do. But trying to breed mealworms did not work out for me. My critters got moldy. Breeding butterworms is nearly impossible. They are irradiated to kill diseases and can't pupate, as I understand.

So, for their price, I think I personally leave it to the experts.

Getting a meal worm colony going is actually pretty easy. The only draw back is that it takes a couple of months to get to the point that you have feeders. But when you do you will have all you will ever need because you can just keep repeating this process.

I followed the method in the following link and now I have all of the mealies I could ever want.

I started with 3 12 quart sterlite tubs, 250 mealies, and worm bedding from cricketfood.com. Although bran will work too. With my latest batch I am using Pro Gecko gut load. I used mealies from www.grubco.com to get my colony started.

I ended up with so many mealies that I started selling them to a local mom and pops pet store.

I agree with sam!
I've got so many mealworms, I could never use them all, and I have about 3 other bins in various stages. I also have one colony of supers and another in beetles. The meal worms are very easy to get going, but it takes about two months. The supers are a little more involving.

I'd try your hand at mealworms first. It is very easy and will provide tons of food in a few months! GOod luck!
