I didn't know there was a so called "American" version ! I had always heard there was the Vietnamease pot belly and the miniature Vietnamese.
Any way, I'm no expert and not calling anyone a liar here. However I bought 2 miniature pot bellies 3 weeks ago. This was not a spur of the moment thing. I've been wanting one (or 2) for several years. They were 4 weeks old the day I pickd them up and were about the size of a softball, already waned and eating solid food from a bowl.
These pigs are supposed to top off at about 40-50 pounds. I saw the parents, and they are small. About the size of a cocker spaniel dog. Pigs are very solid. They weigh a lot more than they look, so don't let the weight scare you. A 50 pound pig is not very big.
Mine are already 95% - 98% liter box trained. That comes pretty natural to them. not quite as well as a cat, but much, much better then a dog !
They came from Squaw Valley Farm in Hartsville, S.C.
I drove 400 miles and paid out a bunch for my pigs, but sometimes you have to pay the price to get what you really want. And after meeting the people that own this place, you can tell they really like and take care of their animals. They raise more than pigs, and they also ship.
If you do a search on "Squaw Valley Farm" you should get their web site address. Hope this helps, and if you need/want more info get in touch !
