View Here $19.99

Recommended Enclosure Size: Minimum aquarium size for the multi cichlid is a 10 gallon, which can comfortably house a small group. Because this fish is so prolific, a 10 gallon may eventually prove too small in a few months’ time. They can certainly start out in a 10, however. They can also be housed with other Lake Tanganyika cichlids, such as Cyprichromis, Callochromis, Julidochromis, etc. in a larger community. Always provide empty snail shells for the fish to take refuge in.

Size: At the time of sale, you will be getting a juvenile animal which is 05.-0.75.” Multies are considered a dwarf cichlid and do not get much bigger than 2.” Males are larger than females by 0.4.”

Age: At the time of purchase, this animal will be at least 3 months old. Multies can live for 8 years or more given proper care, making them fairly long lived for such a small fish.

Feeding: Multies thrive on a primarily carnivorous diet of frozen bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, cichlid pellets and nutritious flakes. Their fry appreciate live baby brine and microworms as well.

The main way to tell the sexes apart is by comparing adult size. When full grown, males will be considerably larger/bulkier than females. Otherwise, they have very similar markings and general appearance. Due to their age, Multi Cichlids sold by Josh’s Frogs are sold as unsexed animals.

Color/Pattern: Multies are a relatively drab fish color-wise. They are a dull grey/brown with some slight gold in the fins when the light strikes them just right. Their banded pattern is perhaps most striking. When they are young, they do not possess the bands; these develop a few months down the line.

Social Behavior: Multies are territorial, but also form complex social hierarchies. Compared to other shell dwelling cichlids, they much prefer to be in groups. Ideally, you will keep many shells on a sandy substrate, where the fish can choose their preferred shells and dig the substrate to their liking. You want to start with fewer males and more females. They prefer to live in harems, with one dominant male mating with multiple females.
