I know that Phoenix stays quite a bit drier and quite a bit hotter during summer than Houston, do you know if any of the Manouria genus could actually do fine year-round in this heat? Even with strong misting systems and shade, it's difficult some days to keep any particular spot outside under 100 degrees. I haven't found anyone locally that has kept them year round (or even tried), so I'm curious what an expert would think.

Hi Jeffrey - Nice to meet you.

Phoenix is great for many varieties of tortoises but extended high temps over 100 are really tough on Mountain Tortoises. I have friends that have worked with Mountain Tortoises and even successfully breed and hatched them in the Phoenix area; it required irrigation, shallow wading pools, deep shade, and indoor/outdoor setups. Unless you can provide a really good setup to cool things down, I don't recommend Mountain Tortoises for your location.

All the best,
John
