How to supplement burrowers?

I have a California legless lizard. I've had him since last October. He appears to be doing fine. My problem, is the only food he seems to eat are mealworms. The mealworms burrow into the sand, where he presumably finds them (he's shedding and pooping and the worms keep disappearing). My question is, how do I supplement him?

The dust doesn't stick too well to mealworms in the first place, and when they go burrowing through the sand...

I'm a bit worried about my lizard's long term health. Do any of you legless skink keepers have any ideas? My guy isn't too fast and seems to spend about 99.9% of his time underground.

Wow, I've never heard of CA legless lizards getting anywhere near large enough to take a pinki. My guy is about the size and width of a pencil. He can't even take full size mealworms.
