Trying to understand redirects

When I try to access my Comcast email, I've been redirected to car advertisement sites for the last two days. (I've resisted the urge to open the site, find contact info, and tell them how pissed off I am because I don't think they would care) I contacted Comcast via their instant chat and they advised to opened a new window and sign in from the Comcast website each time I want to access my email and that is working.

But I am trying to understand what happened to the original mail icon and whether I should be worried about the fact that it is still there, and whether further different redirects could happen.

Thank you for any insights you may have.
