A carnivorous Wood duck???

Hello,

I photographied that female Wood Duck last June at the Carbonneau's marsh in Quebec.

As you can see this female held this dead little fledgling in her beak. She didn't try to swallow it but bath it sometimes in the water.

Any explanations/comments about that???

Thank again for your help!

Michel

look at the size.. I think mommy doesn't want to accept its dead.. the baby looks like it didn't GROW its feathers yet.

my guess at least

Baby ducks have a full coat of fluff from the time they hatch, and since wood ducks nest in the trees, and the babies have to climb up and out of the nest.... I'm sure that isn't a duckling she has ahold of.

That said, I have seen ducks go after frogs and such in the water, I would guess perhaps this baby bird fell out of a nest and into the water, the duck nabbed it...and now doesn't quite know what to do with it.

Really nice pictures. Cat's explanation sounds pretty plausible too me.

I agree with Cathy.

This baby is not from this female wood duck. I think it is a baby Red-winged blackbird. Its feet are not webbed and there is no fluffy coat.

Cheers,

Michel
