What you have there is what is commonly called a 'crusifix spider' araenus diadementus I think , its been a long day  so i am not quite sure on the latin name but 'pretty' sure
its called that because the white spots on it back roughly form a crusifix
during the day they usually have a retreat that they hide in
you should be able to find her during the day by looking for a thicker 'line' from the center of the orb
Be careful though these guys have chelicerae that are quite large and can easily pierce the thickest hands
In the evening throw a small cricket in her web and watch her go.....man its really neet <img src="http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>
hope this helps

It could well be Araneus diadematus, the cross orbweaver, but it could also be a Neoscona sp. My confidence level is not high, I'd need some more close-ups to give you a better answer.
For a complete list of common names of arachnids in North America, North of Mexico by the Committe on Common Names of Arachnids of the American Arachnological Society, free, go to ATSHQ.org and look through the downloads and/or articles online.
