Maryland moves to protect Timber Rattlesnake

Natural Resources Officials Create First Conservation Plan

POSTED: 11:50 am EDT August 23, 2004

FREDERICK, Md. -- Protecting the timber rattlesnake may not be at the top of everyone's list, but the Maryland Department of Natural Resources thinks it's important.

The agency is creating its first conservation plan for non-game species.

And officials said the timber rattler is a good indicator of the effects of habitat disturbances.

The man overseeing the project, Glenn Therres, said that if a timber rattler can't survive in a location, the same habitat may be unfit for other creatures that people find more endearing.
