need some heat cable help

has anyone out there bought a heat cable from home depot with the thermostat inline, taken it and modified it to bypass the thermostat to work in a rack or under cages? im having a hard time with and any input would be greatly appreciated.

sorry wish i could help..seems like it would be easier to buy heat tape and wire yourself unless its much cheaper that way

cheaper, yes

it was 30' for 36.00. i should be able to figure it out though. thanks anyway,

Greg, I tried that - the tape I bought was pipe-heating tape.

The inline thermostat was molded in and pretty much impossible to remove. I tried to cut it apart. I blew the breakers in my house a few times trying to rewire and gave up because it looked like a mess.

However, you might want to look at ROOF heating cable instead. Some brands do NOT have a thermostat (I just bought several hundred feet for my roof and had to buy a separate thermostat for it). Just make sure you do use it with a reliable thermostat since you won't be using it for what it was manufactured for. It is not that easy to bend, though and I haven't tried using any for heating cages (the roof really needed it).

i actually got it to work, i removed the thermostat and rewired it. it works pretty good now.
