Nothing was written on the box aside from the "perishable" writing with the "up facing arrows". The seller normally does write it on the box but was in a rush getting this out to me and forgot. Luck of the draw that it was pulled for inspection.

Well, then that's why you got a letter. It's a federal violation to not at least write "Wildlife" on the box and provide a detailed invoice. You were lucky to just get a delay and letter instead of confiscation and/or fine.

Does CA have a import permit law and if so did you have one for the snake?

Short answer, No.

Scott, if you mean shipping from other states into the state of CA, there is nothing required or to worry about in regards to state permits and state laws as long as what you are bringing in is nonvenomous and nonnative.

Snakes aren't that regulated statewide in CA with the exception of venomous and native species.

I mention state multiple times because you always want to check out your local ordinances as well. Thankfully, reptiles haven't been regulated that much which is surprising thus far considering how heavily regulated mammals, birds and everything else is in CA.

As for the instance mention from the previous poster, CA Fish & Game had no idea the species apparently and the package was unmarked. They probably had to determine it was a harmless BP and then sent the letter for receiving the snake unmarked in violation.
